Exit employees results in exit corporate data

The Ponemon Institute independently conducted a study entitled, Data Loss Risks During Downsizing to understand what employees are doing with the data on the laptops their employers provided them. Interesting finding from this survey involving 945 fired adult American employees:

59% of fired employees (for what ever reason) grabbed business critical confidential customer information. In most cases it was very easy to simply copy data onto CDROM, DVD, USB flash drive and mail as attachments. These actions where absolutely not detected or even registered.

Maybe even more worrying is that 67% of the respondents used the stolen corporate data to leverage a new job. In general, most companies are still doing a very poor job preventing and/or registering data theft due to lack of policies, audits, technology and available skilled security specialists.
